Advice for Pulling it all Together

Putting it All Together
In this assignment you will take control of the basics of photography. After learning rules of photography,
playing with your camera settings to get a desired outcome and now exposure you are set.
You must use these lessons together, adding to you knowledge of photography as you continue to play and
experiment with it. You can take spectacular images by chance or you can choose to make them and I hope that
you pick the later option.
While going through this assignment get out of automatic mode if you can, stretch your creative side and learn
how these things work together. Of course during regular shooting scenarios you will most often be in
automatic mode as manual mode is time consuming. This is okay. You want to use manual mode when you have
time to enjoy the process of it.

If you are unable to set your camera settings to manual remember the basics of the lessons. Set your ISO
speeds accordingly and meter your images off the appropriate aspects of the images.

Image 1, and 2 – Letting loose. Shoot the same scene each with different settings of shutter speed, aperture
and ISO speed. (Note: depending on the scene the same ISO setting may be relevant for all images). From the
images you take choose of your favourites.

Image 3 and 4 – Lock yourself in your bathroom for 10 minutes and shoot 10 images. Focus shooting for effect
as well as try shooting some images with the lights on and some with the lights off or dimmed.

Image 5 and 6 – Night Shot. Again using all the basics you have learned paying close attention to your exposure
settings. Take multiple shots until you have accomplished your desired effect.

Image 7 – Abstract. Shoot colour, contrast, shapes or all three together. We don’t need to know what it is, we
are looking for art.

Image 8 – Candles. Try to make the shot compelling by applying some of the rules. It could be part of a scene,
could be interacted with or shot individually just remember to apply your exposure knowledge to the shot.

Image 9 – People. Tell us a story. This could be a group of people or one person but it shouldn’t be posed.
Photojournalism is story telling photography.

Image 10 – Move the Camera. While shooting move the camera. Jump up and down, shake it, zoom the lens in
or out. You will need to focus on your shutter speeds for this one as well as your subject.

Image 11 – Challenge. Take a self portrait. See Self Portrait tip sheet.
